SUSTAINABILTY TIPS

tips for hosting a sustainable event

Food + BEVERAGE

  • Consider batched signature cocktails and organic mixers.

  • Provide one alcohol-designated glass per guest and ask them to reuse throughout the evening.

  • Skip the champagne toast! They are notoriously wasteful as most guests take a few sips and leave the rest.

  • Make sure to order as accurately as possible for dessert and late night snack as they are the biggest culprits for food waste.

  • Donate excess, non-contaminated food to a local shelter, food bank or organization.

FLORAL + DECOR

  • Minimal, understated floral can have the same impact as larger floral displays if done properly.

  • Rent decor such as candle holders, tableware, vases, backdrops, and more from local vendors.

  • Ask your florist to refrain from using floral foam as it is a known carcinogen and incredibly toxic.

  • Connect with other locals who are planning events to share or reuse decor.

  • Skip or limit printed materials: save the dates, invitations, programs, table numbers, seating chart, name cards, thank yous, etc.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Encourage guests to carpool or use public transit. PAIKKA is located off the Green Line and near many Metro Transit stops.

  • Provide guests with information regarding what to expect from your event re: sustainability. A quick note in your invitation or an announcement from an officiant or DJ can help guests understand expectations.

  • Purchase jewelry from ethical jewelers.

  • Select a charity (or a few!) for guests to donate to on your behalf in lieu of a registry or party favors.

  • Choose local or vintage as much as possible (apparel, jewelry, accessories, decor).
